Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “önemsiz sindirilebilirler”) tanılamamlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine destelanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile diğeri arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok nüshada polipeptit zir birimi çitndırır). Gerçek fark peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, öbür amino asite sakır sakır, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle destelanır. Polipeptid dokumasına merhametsizlan amino asitlerin her biri dokumaya peptid destelarıyla destelanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir kez çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Yaklaşık bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilinen en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine merhametsizlan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, azade amino grubu çitndırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öbür ucundaki azade α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
